God’s love is always there for us…
This week I had some moments where I questioned whether God really loved me. Don’t we all have those moments where no matter how hard you pray nothing seems to be working out? Well, I had those thoughts this past week. As I went home one day, I heard a song on the radio about God’s love, and how he never gives up on us. That got me thinking – is there something about his love that I am yet to learn? How is his love described in the Bible?
- His love is steadfast
Check out this verse from Psalm 136.
Psalm 136:1 “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”(ESV)
Another version puts it this way…
Psalm 136:1 “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” (NLT)
The word steadfast means unwavering or faithful – in other words –remaining the same ALL the time! Can I repeat this – ALL the time! It doesn’t matter how you and I feel, his love hasn’t changed.
Many times, we feel like we are far from God’s love because we have moved away, or because there is something standing in between us and our Father. God doesn’t change how he loves us, when he loves us and his reasons for loving us. His love remains the same!
- His love is everlasting
Note the last words of the verse above –“endures forever”. What does that bring to mind? For me, these words made me think of something that lasts forever, and whose existence is timeless. God’s love cannot be measured by time because it was there even before times and seasons existed.
What does that mean for us? Well, this enduring love is available to us whenever we need it – during the day or night, during the happy and sad times, and whether we are young or old. If you need a dose of his love at 5 am, for example, you do not have to wait for 5 pm when he is on duty. Any time you need to experience his love, it is there for you!
Jeremiah 31:3 ‘Long ago the LORD said to Israel: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself.”’ (NLT)
- His love quiets us
Zephaniah 3:17 “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” (ESV)
How does God quiet us with his love? As I compared the verse above with the same verse in other versions, I noted that the word ‘quiet’ is replaced by ‘will no longer rebuke you’ (NIV) and ‘will calm all your fears’ (NLT). God, therefore, quiets us by choosing not to rebuke us any more, calming our fears instead.
This verse, though specifically referring to Jerusalem’s redemption, is applicable to us today. Have you ever noticed that after a difficult season God pours out his love on you abundantly, making you feel confident as you trust in him, and giving you strength to face your fears? That, my friends, is how he quiets all of us.
Maybe you are not feeling his love today, and yet you long for it so desperately. Well, the best place to get this love is from the source – God. His faithful, everlasting love will quiet your fears!
Let me end with one more verse about his love.
Psalm 52:8 “But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love forever and ever.” (NIV)
