This was not the first time I had forgotten to pray…but it was one of the times I learnt a lesson from it.
The alarm rang promptly at 6 am,
Oh no, I thought… is it time to wake up already?
I got up and got myself ready to face the day.
Had breakfast, read the Bible,
Said my goodbyes and left the house.
One thing was missing, though…
I forgot to pray.
How does one start the day without prayer, you ask? Well, I did…
Psalm 119:147 “I rise early, before the sun is up; I cry out for help and put my hope in your words.” (NLT)
The day wore on,
And somehow nothing was working out.
I must be tired, I thought.
Or just disorganized.
Maybe the day had too much going on.
Maybe the day was different from other days.
I guess it had not yet hit me,
That I forgot to pray.
This was one of those days that took ages to end.
I felt tired, bored, listless, and I had an ache somewhere that would not go away.
I snapped at the children,
And I found the house chores dreary.
As the evening came along,
I asked myself,
How come this day is going so badly?
Then I remembered…
I forgot to pray.
We forget to pray all the time – why was this day different?
I had not asked God to bless the day.
I had not asked God for his help to face my daily challenges.
I had not acknowledged that I needed Him to take charge of the day.
Perhaps I thought I could handle it – after all, there was nothing new taking place.
But even within the ordinary, I needed God.
I should not have forgotten to pray.
But I did.
Psalm 5:3 “Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.” (NLT)
I should have talked to the Lord in the morning.
I should have taken time to hear what He had to say.
I should have listened.
I should have asked.
I should have let Him take charge of my stuff.
I should have waited for His instructions.
I should have prayed.
Yes, I forgot to pray.
I forgot that I needed Him.
I forgot that without Him, I am nothing,
And I can do nothing.
I forgot that He cares about the smallest details of my life,
The details that went all wrong that day.
Lord, help me to always remember to pray,
In the morning, afternoon, evening and night.
Always seeking your face, always listening to You.
Because, Lord,
Without your help, I will fail,
And without you,
I am nothing.
Psalm 143:8 “Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you.
Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.” (NLT)
Hi, everyone! This week’s poem was not an easy one to write – it is not easy to admit that sometimes I forget to pray! Have you ever forgotten to pray and then your day, week or month has gone all wrong? Please share in the comments section. Have a blessed week ahead!
Thanks Alison for the poem and the sharing. I think when we forget to talk toGod the devil tries to take over but our comfort comes in knowing that God’s presence is with us all the time. God in His grace forgives and restores His children.
