His Goodness

When there is darkness all around, it is pretty hard to see God’s goodness

Morning came. We all got ready and headed out.

It was a Friday in March,

Friday the 13th to be precise.

The day went well until some time in the afternoon when the news came.

“First case reported in Kenya!”

Shivers and shakes ran through my body.

What did this mean for me, for us, for our land?

A few days later we found ourselves at home.

Not knowing what lay ahead.

Uncertainty and fear clouded all thoughts of hope,

Causing me to forget His goodness.

Days turned into weeks and months.

Every day the news became worse.

Conspiracy theories did the rounds one after the other.

Who is responsible? Who did this to us?

My mind became filled with conflict and doubt.

I cried to the Lord, yes, I did,

But without asking Him what His will was.

Instead asking Him to take away this thing that troubled us.

Once again, I forgot His goodness.

You all know by now what happens to a mind that is filled with doubt, right?

It crashes. Hard.

It stops working.

My mind stopped.

I couldn’t pray any longer.

I would start praying and go blank.

On some days I would even forget to pray!

What a terrible place to be at!

Then I remembered a lesson I had learnt many years ago,

That focusing on the wrong thing always drains the soul.

My soul was drained.

I had forgotten to focus on the right thing.

The goodness of God.

Psalm 34:8 “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” (NKJV)

In my blank state of mind,

I slowly began to remember the Lord’s goodness.

I was alive. I had a roof over my head.

He had protected me from unseen dangers.

He had watched over my family.

As I looked back, the list grew longer and longer.

And with every memory, my focus turned back to Him.

My eyes gradually moving away from the darkness towards His light.

I could now focus fully on His goodness.

And as soon as I did so,

I realized that in His goodness,

He would take control over everything

For my good.

Psalm 119:68a “You are good, and what you do is good;” (NIV)

I was free.

Free to look to the Lord and enjoy the beauty of His presence.

Free to learn from His Word.

Free to meditate on His promises.

Free to bask in His goodness.

Free to live a life of joy and peace,

Even in the midst of prevailing darkness.

Free.

Because of His goodness.

Lord, thank you for reminding me to focus on Your goodness.

Thank you for helping me to focus on you once again.

Thank you for not letting me drown in the pit of darkness.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to experience your goodness.

Thank you.

Psalm 145:9 The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works. (NKJV)

Hi, everyone! God is good! He knows exactly what He is up to during this season. Our job is not to focus on the darkness, but to focus on Him and remember His goodness. God has done so much for us in the past, and His word assures us that He will continue to do so in the future. I hope that you are encouraged by this short poem. Please share it with someone who is in need of a little encouragement during this season. Also, don’t forget to leave your comments in the comment box. God bless you.

  1. Thank you for reminding us to focus on Gods goodness even in the midst of life’s storms. The fact that we have the breath of life today is enough to know that God loves and cares for us. Amen
