Even in the shadows… He is there.
The phone rang, for the fifth time that day.
The news was not encouraging,
And all we could do was listen,
And wait.
What a season that was,
It seemed like there were shadows everywhere.
Every night I would ask myself,
Where is God,
In the shadows?
The shadows lingered on,
Becoming darker every day.
It seemed like things were not getting any better.
There would be a brief flash of light,
Then a few hours later,
The shadows would be back,
Thicker and darker than they were before.
Night would come,
And I would ask myself,
Lord, are you there,
In the shadows?
Hearts became heavier,
And spirits dampened,
As the shadows persisted day after day,
Resisting the fresh wind that tried its best to blow them away.
Then one day, the thickest shadow fell,
And with it, tears.
And more tears.
‘Lord,’ I cried, ‘were the shadows not thick enough already?
Why can we not see Your hand,
In the shadows?’
Days went by,
And though the tears seemed to dry up,
The shadows persisted.
Then, all of a sudden, there was a glimmer of light.
A tiny bit of light, barely noticeable.
But it was enough to lift our spirits.
Every day it grew bigger,
Little by little,
Until it began to push the shadows away.
It was a miracle!
A miracle that nobody expected to take place.
In the shadows.
God was there all along.
He knew what He was doing.
Though the pain remained in our hearts,
There was hope.
God had sent that light,
That tiny bit of light,
To restore our hope and faith in Him,
To remind us that He was still there,
Holding our hands and leading the way,
Comforting and strengthening us,
In the shadows.
Psalm 23:4 “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.” (NLT)
